About Us

The Van Waart family’s interest in the field of fertility started in 1993, when Lizanne and Johannes went through three years of fertility treatment before conceiving their second son by a GIFT procedure. But first they experienced about three miscarriages in the years before fertility treatment.

Dr Johannes van Waart started fertility treatment in his private practice in 2001, after finishing specialist training as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the medical school of Stellenbosch University. In 2004 he completed his post-specialist fellowship in Reproductive Biology and Menopause under Prof Thinus F. Kruger (a world-renowned fertility specialist) and Prof Ernst Sonnendecker (a well-known menopause expert). Furthermore, he completed additional training in Laparoscopic Surgery in France in 2007.

Wijnland has invested wisely in their intellectual property, giving their patients exposure to exceptionally trained staff who are committed to upholding and striving to improve international standards and success rates. Furthermore, they have acquired state of the art equipment, amongst others the now well-recognised EmbryoscopeTM, that allows laboratory staff to optimise embryo development and success rates.

Lizanne van Waart completed her Master‘s degree in Psychological Counselling regarding fertility at Stellenbosch University, while providing psychosocial guidance for fertility patients at the clinic. Furthermore, she is actively involved in the IICO (International Infertility Counselling Organisation).

Dr Paul Dalmeyer has been involved in the field of Reproductive Medicine for the last 30 years. He is an infertility specialist who recently relocated to Cape Town. He is a part time lecturer at both the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. He has joined Wijnland Fertility as a part time consultant and will share his vast expertise with the Wijnland Team. Furthermore he has wide experience in all aspects of this field as well as Menopausal Medicine. He is a great asset we can depend on. He is the founder of the first Private IVF clinic in South Africa and has served on multiple national and international boards in the field of Reproductive Medicine and Menopausal Health.

Our Clinic

Our Approach

Our patient-centered approach here at Wijnland Fertility and is what differentiates us. Technically, most of the fertility services are provided by numerous other clinics, but they are offered in isolation.

Wijnland Fertility chooses to use a biopsychosocial model (BPS), which is a general model or approach stating that biological, psychological (thoughts, emotions, and behaviours), and social (socio-economical, -environmental, & cultural) factors all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness.

We aim to treat patients physically, psychologically and socially in a warm, welcoming environment. For us it is not just about success rates, but rather the total experience. In fact, it’s this approach that increases our odds and it shows in the numbers.

We have some of the latest laboratory equipment and advanced technologies available to provide our patients with the best possible care in assisted reproduction.

All our equipment is top-of-the-range, specialised IVF equipment imported from leading IVF manufacturers. The consumables we use in our protocols are IVF approved and tested to be safe for use on embryos and sperm. Our embryologists are trained scientifically and practically in IVF processes and are registered with the HPCSA.

In 2010, the first IVF was done at Wijnland and our third patient fell pregnant. From then on the results have been overwhelming and we have always strived to continue to provide an excellent laboratory service.

We have private consultation rooms in our own clinic, near the MediClinic, Stellenbosch (we do all the reproductive surgeries at the MediClinic Hospital).

On premises, state-of-the-art, fully-equipped, registered day theatre.

Beautiful, modern and colourful four-bedroom recovery area.

Success Rates

At Wijnland Fertility, success is not just a rate for us. It’s about the total experience and being patient-centered. If we do this right, our chances of success are always higher. It shows in our numbers.

IVF, ICSI & Frozen Embryo Results

It is estimated that 70% of the success in a clinic is due to the accurate execution of IVF laboratory procedures. We are a young but fast-growing clinic, with cycles increasing every year. We have completed about 325 treatment cycles in the past 2 years, and are proud to present the results.

EmbryoScopeTM compared to Standard Benchtop Incubation

The EmbryoScopeTM was obtained in August 2013 and fully integrated into laboratory operations in January 2014. Since we have been using the EmbryoScopeTM for embryo selection, it has optimised the efficiency of embryo implantation in our facility. We have managed to increase the number of implanted embryos, i.e. doing more single embryo transfers, with the same pregnancy results. From an average of 1.98 embryos transferred, it has changed to 1.21 embryos per transfer, with a corresponding lowered multiple pregnancy rate – from 23,4% to 15,6%.

IMSI compared to Standard ICSI

Our laboratory introduced a highly sophisticated, high-magnification system that enables us to select even better-quality sperm after ICSI did not deliver desirable results. This process is called IMSI and has shown to improve the chances of a pregnancy compared to standard ICSI in the case of poor sperm morphology or parameters. Only fresh embryo transfers are currently compared.
